Obituary of Gary E. Nicewonger, Sr.

**In Loving Memory of Gary Emerson Nicewonger**

*July 12, 1949 – April 9, 2025*

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Gary Emerson Nicewonger on April 9, 2025, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was 75 years old. He is preceded in death by beloved mother Emily Wentz and father Blaine Nicewonger.

Born on July 12, 1949, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Gary spent most of his life in Armagh, PA—a place he loved and proudly called home. Former owner of R&N Market. Retired meat cutter from Shop N Save. A lifelong farmer, Gary found peace in the rhythms of the land. His days were shaped by the seasons, early mornings, and the satisfaction that came from hard work and quiet devotion. To him, farming wasn’t just what he did—it was who he was. He continued this for the last 15 years by helping Gary Jr anyway he was needed; from working the land to moving equipment, nothing was too small.

Gary was strong and gentle, with a heart big enough for everyone he met. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and a friend to all. He was the devoted husband of Connie (Reed) Nicewonger. Married for 49 years, their bond was one of deep love, partnership, and unwavering support. Gary’s love for Connie was evident in everything he did—especially in how he loved taking her anywhere her heart desired, just to see her smile.

Together, Gary and Connie raised three children—Melissa Brubaker(Joe Knopsnider), Karrie Nicewonger (Randy Overly), and Gary, Jr (Kristi Nicewonger) —who each carry with them their father’s strength, humility, and quiet wisdom. He was brother to Harvey Nicewonger, Greg (Pat Nicewonger), Barbara  (Johnny Moore), plus numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a proud and loving “Pap” to his grandchildren—Spencer, Shaylee, Sydnie, Tyler, Emily, Case, Brock, and Skylah—and great-grandchildren—Silas, Henley, and Gunnar. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Whether he was making them breakfast, watching them play, or simply sitting beside them, those moments were his greatest treasures.

Gary also cherished keeping in touch with the people he loved. He could often be found on the phone catching up with relatives and longtime friends, making sure no connection ever faded with time. He had a special way of making people feel remembered and valued.

One of his favorite pastimes was going to the auction—a tradition he looked forward to and thoroughly enjoyed. If he wasn’t watching his favorite western movies, he would be quietly enjoying his love for bird watching; often taking a peaceful moment to admire the beauty of nature outside his window. These quiet joys reflected his appreciation for life’s simplest blessings.

Gary will be remembered for his calm demeanor, generous heart, strong faith, and steady presence. He didn’t need to say much to make an impact; his actions spoke volumes. He taught those around him the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the beauty of a simple, honest life.

Viewing will be held at Richard C. Stuart Funeral Home, 392 E. Philadelphia St., Armagh on Sun April 13th from 2-4 and 6-8, with funeral service to follow on Mon April 14th at 11 AM with burial service after. Friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of a man who was truly one of a kind.

In lieu of flowers, any donations to Stuart’s Funeral Home will help support the family with the service and burial.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
