Jean L. Fisher, 92, Venice FL, formerly of Bolivar passed away July 9, 2022, at Maris Pointe, Eagle Senior Living, Venice, FL. Born June 14, 1930, in Bolivar, PA, the daughter of late Roy “Jot” and Lydia Marie (Cable) Burkett. Also preceded in death by husband Robert D. Fisher, sisters Irene Gibson, Gladys Sisitki, and Helen McClure, and brother Roy “Bud” Burkett, Texas.
Survived by daughters Sherri Progar and husband Ralph, Venice, FL; Deborah Williams and husband Brien, Fort Worth TX. Grandchildren Lauren Maskelony and Philip, Rochester NY; Elizabeth Garcia and husband J. R., Fort Worth TX; step-granddaughter Susan Reagan and Sean, Monaca PA; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 step-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Betty Joan “Jo” Burkett, El Paso TX.
A member of the 1948 class of Bolivar high school, Jean attended Cambria-Rowe business college after graduation. She worked for the phone company during the ‘50s until her daughter’s birth. She and Bob purchased their home on Lincoln St in 1954. She returned to the workforce in the late 1960s and was employed by the Bolivar Water Company and then Standard Steel and Wire, from which she retired.
Jean was an active member of Bolivar Methodist church, teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible school, and serving as secretary. Before moving to St. Barnabas assisted living, Pittsburgh, in 2017, she attended Bolivar Presbyterian church where she participated faithfully in making nut and maple rolls. Jean was also a member of the DAR Jacob Ferree chapter, Sewickley, PA.
Avid travelers, Jean and Bob explored the lower 48, by visiting state and national parks large and small. She delighted in discovering the entire country from New England, through the mid-west, the deep south, south-west, and even route 66. Their adventures took them to Hawaii, Canada, and Bermuda. When not traveling, she enjoyed viewing documentary films on exotic places or listening to the ballads of the ‘40s.
The tiny woman was an athlete, skilled in swimming, diving, golf, square dancing, and everything in between. Jean was well known by family, neighbors, and friends for her homemade grape jelly and knitted dish clothes, which were often gifted for no apparent reason.
Jean was a devoted wife, caring for her beloved Bob, even after Alzheimer’s stripped her of comprehension.
She was the mother who carted all the neighborhood children to and from school events. Her home was the house where the kids congregated. She led summer walks through the woods, and organized winter ice skating and sled riding adventures. Her kind and loving spirit touched everyone she met.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any contributions be made in her memory to Tidewell Hospice, 3550 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239; 941-552-7546 or via their website https://tidewellfoundation.org/donate/
