Obituary of Mary Gladys Tomb

Mary Gladys (Newcomer) Tomb peacefully went on her final journey, home to her Lord, on May 13, 2024, surrounded by family. She was born October 20, 1933, in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania to Howard Emmons and Mary Gladys (Collier) Newcomer. She met Alvin Myles Tomb at Penn State, and they married June 8, 1957. During their marriage they raised their family in Forest Park, Ohio and later retired near Fayetteville, Ohio. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Al, her sister Dorcas Eileen Newcomer Cloud, her sister Shirley Ann Newcomer McHugh, her brother-in-law Robert Elias Edwards, and her former brotherin-law David Buchanan Cloud. She is survived by her sister Janet Marie Newcomer Edwards; her brother-in-law John Richard McHugh; daughters Karen Leigh Gresham (Michael), Karol Lynn Heyman (Lance), and Kristine Laise Reese; grandchildren Brandon Reese (Alyssa), Kristine Shelton (Nick), Emma Heyman Williams (Jacob), and Anna Heyman (special friend, James Marcum); great-grandchildren Rebecca Reese, Ayla Reese, Luke Shelton, and Bentley Shelton; 12 nieces and nephews and their families. Mrs. Tomb was a 1951 graduate of Clarks Summit-Abington Joint High School and an alumnus of The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She also held a Master of Education degree from the University of Cincinnati. She began her lengthy career teaching Nursery School at Forest Chapel United Methodist Church, going on to teach high school students in Cincinnati Public Schools and Great Oaks Joint Vocational Schools. At Scarlet Oaks she taught Home Economics. At Diamond Oaks she taught Early Childhood Development which included running a nursery school program. She loved having both young children and her high school students in the classroom together. As an active church member throughout her life, she enjoyed teaching Sunday School for young children and participated in choir and other various activities. She volunteered for church functions and joined bowling and quilting groups. Later in life she was one of the charter members of New Beginnings Church of Belfast. Burial was at the Armagh Cemetery in Armagh, Pennsylvania. A graveside service was held May 22, 2024, officiated by Pastor Barry Brown of Memorial Baptist Church, Dilltown, Pennsylvania. Arrangements were coordinated by the John H. Evans Funeral Home in Milford, Ohio and the Richard C. Stuart Funeral Home in Armagh, Pennsylvania.
