Obituary of Doris H. Anderson

Anderson, Doris (Hysong), 91, New Florence, PA, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Sunrise of Abington, Abington, PA. Born October 24, 1922, at 112 Chestnut Street, New Florence, the daughter of the late James and Helen “Lucinda” (Liggett) Hysong. Doris graduated valedictorian from New Florence High School, 1940, received a B.S. from Indiana State Teacher’s College, 1944, and later a M.S. in Geography from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 1970. Her career included teaching 5 years of high school chemistry in Phillipsburg, PA, 1 year kindergarten at New Florence Elementary in 1964-65, and 20 years at the Marker Building in Ligonier, teaching 7th grade geography and then life science until she retired in 1985. Doris was a talented educator, seamstress, artist, and musician. She was a lifelong member of the New Florence Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir for many years. In earlier years, she served as president of the Fairfield Elementary PTA. After retirement, she was a deacon in her church and played piano and taught an adult Sunday school class, was involved with fund raising for the New Florence Library, volunteered at the food bank, and served on the 1980 high school reunion committee. She participated in groups involved in china painting, doll making, quilting, card club, and the local “Scalawags!” She was devoted to her family and hosted many celebrations both in Rachelwood and her home in New Florence. She was a three-time cancer survivor. Her life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and hard work. She was well-loved and respected by her family and friends. She is predeceased by her husband, Leverne, whom she married August 26, 1950. Also predeceased by sister Helen, brother James, sisters Inez and Marjorie. Survivors include two sons; David and wife Sarah Anderson, Rockville, MD and Barry and wife Debora, Kailua, HI; daughter Janine and husband Larry, Philadelphia, PA; brother Donald and wife Elizabeth, Johnstown, PA. Her 11 grandchildren: Nathan, Beaumont, CA; Casey and wife Nicole, Casper, WY; Kelly and husband Eric of Louisville, CO, Benjamin and wife Pamela, Petaluma, CA; David and wife Kristen, Washington, D.C.; Michael and wife Anna, Frederick, MD; Abigail, Denver, CO; Sharon, Rockville, MD, Chelsea, Sun Luis Obispo, CA, Rebecca, Rockville, MD; Mitchell, Kailua, HI, seven great-grandchildren, and 18 nieces and nephews as well as cousins. Friends will be received Saturday from 11 AM to 12:45 at the Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, 139 Ligonier Street, New Florence, PA 15944 with procession to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 117 Chestnut St., New Florence for service at 1 PM. Rev. Barry Young officiating with Craig Shakarji assisting. Special thanks to church family and friends who have remembered and supported Doris through her 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
