Obituary of Leroy O Shetler
Shetler, Leroy O. "Hammer", 83, New Florence died December 16, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center. Born January 4, 1928 in Robinson the son of late Leroy "Newt" and Myra (Lichtenfels) Shetler. Also Preceded in death by wife of 58 years Zella "Billie" (Henderson) Shetler; infant grandsons Hoyt William and Tracer Leroy Shetler; brothers Charles and Paul Shetler; sisters Lydia Penrod, Essie Anderson and Helen McAdams. Survived by children Darrel Shetler and wife Marjorie (Keith); Eric Shetler and wife Tina (Jarvis); Teresa Ling and husband Jeffrey, all of New Florence; grandchildren Susanna Saunders, Seward; Tammy Spitznogle and husband Jim, New Florence; Deric Shelter, Joplin, MO; Dylan and Noah Burkett, Garit, Shooter and Lily Shetler, all of New Florence; great-grandchildren Scott and Christopher Fetzer, Katelyn Saunders, Brittney, Trevor and Jamie Spitznogle, Tyler Forsythe and Kaylan Burkett; brothers Earl and Carl "Jiggs" Shetler; sisters Lavina Ritenour, Flo "Doodle" Hicks and Jean Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hammer was an US Army veteran of WWII having served in the Pacific Theater. He worked for several mining companies including Old Home Manor and worked construction with Kukurin Construction and Latrobe Construction, and was a member of Operator's Engineer's Local 66. He also drove truck for many years, most recently for Wright/Knox Motor Lines. Hammer was an avid stock car driver for over 20 years. He raced at all of the local tracks, and held the track speed record at Lernerville Speedway until recently. He also farmed the land where he lived. Also a life member of the New Florence Vol Fire Co. Friends received 2-4 and 6-9 pm Monday at Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, 139 Ligonier St., New Florence where service will be held 11 am Tuesday. Rev. Scott Hamley officiating. Military rite by local veteran organization. Interment Fairfield Cemetery.
