Harry Richards (Rich) was my best army buddy. We were stationed together at Fort Lewis, Washington. I am saddened to learn about his passing. I truly lost a great friend.
Rich talked me into quitting smoking. We both smoked at that time. He somehow quit smoking, and he told me I should quit too. He kept at me to quit, he would say things like, “Benson, you don’t have enough guts to quit” or “You aren’t man enough to quit.” He finally got it across to me to quit, and I finally gave up smoking. That was about 57 years ago.
Just think how much better off I am today both in saving money, and in my health. I have my best army buddy, Rich, to thank.
I also got to meet Rich’s mom, dad, and his sister, who I believe was named Janice. They drove from Pennsylvania to visit Rich. They were some of the best people you could ever meet. They took me in as part of the family. They had their camping site all set up. Rich and I slept in the back of the Rambler Station Wagon. We went all the way to Mount Rainer National Park. What good memories I have of my good army buddy.
I am so sad for the family, Rest in Peace, my dear friend, Rich.
