I'm surprised and saddened to learn of "Dwight's" passing and extend my condolences to the families, relatives and friends.
He and I worked side by side for a decade or more at The Florence Mining Company as Longwall Mining team members, mine rescue participants and at occasional recreational and social events.
As recreational weight lifters, we challenged each other to feats of strength which I always lost, (Lee was One Strong Man) as he would smile broadly and advise that I needed to lift more weights !!!
As a mine mechanic Lee was at the top of his game and made the most difficult tasks look easy and with superior results always. Selflessly, he would generously share his wealth of knowledge, experience and job techniques with curious onlookers.
As a teenage rookie Red Hat coal miner, he taught me how to weld and hone that skill to a respectable level through practice and patience while boasting that I would likely never be as good as he was...and he was 100% correct with that assessment..
He will be missed by many as One of The GOOD GUYS. May God rest his soul in eternal peace. Chuck Altimus
